If you were to look at the students passing by as they go to class, you would probably notice that the students, on average, are relatively fit. Since beach season is coming up it is a trend that people like to get in shape, and UNCW has taken advantage of the opportunity to kick off spring by opening a Subway in the Fisher Student Union.
The strategy as a whole is effective on both ends; the students and the University seem to be enjoying it. There is a flowing line at any hour during the school day. Maybe it's because it's new and a change of pace, but it could be that students are pushing away from the fast food market and leaning toward eating healthier.
There has been a health movement on campus: the idea of feeding your brain from the juice smoothie bar or the "eat fresh" Subway bar. Students want to fit into the trend of being fit. Most of the eateries on campus are adding new items to their menu for the calorie-watchers, and a good number of the dining areas display the food facts beside the item of food.
Could we be seeing more of this in the future? Possibly. It is promising that restaurants on campus will go with what works, and the growing trend seems to be working in everyone's favor.
Some people are not as satisfied with the addition of Subway, though.
"It's either Chick-fil-A or Subway," says sophomore Andrew Everette. "They need to think of something else besides sub places to bring on campus."
When faced with the decision day after day, it is easy to see why some students turn to eating other less healthy options. It is difficult for the University to please everyone in such a large and diverse student body, but they are making a conscious effort.
Students seem to be enjoying the addition of Subway to the Student Union. Business is constant and, because they are a new, healthier dining option, it will be a success for the remainder of the spring season.
