The release party for the latest issue of Atlantis, UNCW's creative magazine, was held last Thursday night at the Soapbox. Poetry editor Keith Kopka hosted the event. The readings were followed by local music performers Speakeasy and Willie & Me. Hoards of students and other residents from the community came to see authors from the magazine recite their poetry on the multi-color lit stage. Art from the pages of the magazine was also displayed around the venue. The audience laughed, cheered for and encouraged contributing students that recited their work.

Atlantis contributor and Willie & Me guitarist William Coppage said, "Last semester was the first time I had a poem published in Atlantis. I went to my professor and I was like, 'Look! I got published!' It's an amazing feeling."

Many of the students at the event had never been to a reading before and were excited to listen to their friends read their work. Drew Peterson, a sophomore at UNCW, recited poetry on stage for the first time that night.

Peterson said, "It was a little nerve-racking, but it was a really nice opportunity to hear my work out loud. Usually you get too caught up in how it looks on the paper."

Peterson said he enjoyed the experience and thought it was pretty interesting.

He added, "It's a great way to get my work out there. It's really thrilling for me; I've never been published before. The thrill is when someone walks up to me and says 'Your poem meant something to me.' That's all I want, I just want to touch people."

Atlantis can be obtained at the UNCW campus or read online at www.AtlantisOnline.org.
