The constitution is set as the Student Government Association announced the official re-launch of Hawkstream Radio, a student-run Web-based radio station catering to students and the surrounding community. Hawkstream Radio, which began streaming April 7, 2008, plans to integrate a wide variety of music specifically chosen by the student body.

With 28 DJs and an entertaining lineup streaming everything from talk shows discussing social, political and international issues to sports coverage of UNCW athletics, Hawkstream's station manager Danielle Gardner expresses great appreciation for her team.

"My DJ's are awesome," Gardner said. "We are grateful for this opportunity as we continue to build the station and ensure a reputable representation of the UNCW community as a whole."

Gardner thanks Vice Chancellor of ITSD Dr. Debra Saunders-White for all her support.

Students began planning the development of Hawkstream Radio in fall 2006, as they hoped to establish their own independent voice on campus. While they are not currently seeking a terrestrial station, students can listen live straight from their computers. Some initiatives already in place include the talk show "Seahawk Talk" with Gregory Johnson on Tuesdays at 4 p.m., a "Best DJ Show" on Saturdays at 8 a.m. and a comedy show Saturday nights at 8 p.m. Future initiatives include a "Top 40 Show" on Mondays that will be distinct to UNCW students via electronic survey of top songs and an "iPod Shuffle Show," streaming play lists from random students' iPods on campus.

Brittany Glover, otherwise known as "DJ Poetic Justice" represents the R&B music genre, discussed a typical day: "It's extremely hectic, but the overall results are good. We are just getting started so we don't expect everything to be perfect and are learning how to work together-that's teamwork."

When it comes to the expert in the station, Glover is grateful to have UNCW student DJ Mike Lang's help because "he knows a lot of information that we don't so he teaches us."

Glover also works on the Flava Unit with Coast 97.3 and chose to work with Hawkstream Radio not only because of her love for music, but because she hopes to gain new skills and eventually share them with others.

"You ultimately learn new skills from others who have already acquired them and that's what we are doing," she said.

The Hawkstream Radio station is located on campus on Lionfish Drive in the Network Communications building. Using self-sustainable software, Hawkstream Radio streams from ITSD at the streaming URL: hawkstream.uncw.edu/hawkstream.
