If you're ready to kiss those butts goodbye - cigarette butts, that is the Student Health Organization and Crossroads are determined to help. These organizations are bringing The Great American Smokeout to UNCW Nov. 20.

The SHA and Crossroads will be outside Randall Library, or inside the University Union in the case of bad weather, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to promote National Quit Smoking day, encouraging people to break the habit with free turkey sandwiches, in honor of quitting "cold turkey." Prizes will also be up for grabs.

Crossroads will have tables set up on Nov. 13 and Nov. 19 in the University Union promoting UNCW's tobacco policy and will distribute information about quitting. They will have carbon monoxide monitors at all of the tables for student smokers to see how smoking is affecting their health. The first 50 students to use the carbon monoxide machines Nov. 20 will receive a free T-shirt if the machines show that they have not smoked that day.

The Great American Smokeout has been around since the '70s. Traditionally, the Smokeout takes place on the third Thursday in November every year. On that day, thousands of American Cancer Society volunteers visit schools, malls and workplaces to spread the word about quitting the harmful addiction.

The Great American Smokeout brings awareness to those who are trying to quit that they are not alone. They express that those trying to quit can do it together, leaning on each other for support.

The UNCW tobacco policy does not allow smoking in UNCW vehicles and in UNCW buildings; smoking is prohibited up to 25 feet outside the entrances to campus buildings; the sale of or free distribution of tobacco products on campus is not allowed; and registered student organizations are not allowed to accept sponsorships from, or promoting, tobacco companies.

Smokers can pick up a quick kit to stop smoking or talk to someone about quitting in Westside Hall or in room 104 in the Suites Services Building. The Student Health Center also provides assistance to those trying to quit smoking.
