The UNCW women's club lacrosse team hosted five universities last weekend in their second annual Summer Blues tournament. The two day event welcomed teams from UNC, Duke, High Point, Virginia Tech and NC State to play in the round robin tournament.

The opening game of the tournament resulted in a forfeit victory for UNCW after NC State arrived with only six players; however, UNCW still agreed to play the Wolfpack for fun with a help of a few of their own players.

The Seahawks' next game pitted them against national lacrosse power Virginia Tech, who proved to be a challenging opponent, handing UNCW a 13-3 loss. "We started off kind of rough, but our next two games are going to be phenomenal," sophomore Molly Howell said following the lopsided defeat.

Howell's confidence seemed to permeate through the whole UNCW team as they began afternoon play. The Seahawks began the second half of Saturday by upsetting ACC power UNC Chapel Hill, 9-6; however, they were unable to carry that momentum into the last match of the day, falling to High Point, 8-2.

On Sunday, UNCW faced off with Duke in their final match of the tournament, losing 10-5. After the completion of the round robin, Virginia Tech and UNC advanced to the final, where the Hokies downed the Tar Heels, 10-5. The tournament victory came as no surprise to Virginia Tech team president Mindy Sarton. "We have a pretty experienced team and did not lose many players this year," she said describing the team that finished ninth in the national rankings last year.

Along with consistent game play, the tournament included multiple lacrosse venders who sold both clothes and lacrosse gear. Food was also offered and many spectators lined the intramural fields of UNCW to cheer on their home team.

The Summer Blues tournament is just the beginning of the season for the women of UNCW lacrosse. Club president Meaghan Burns has plans for the Seahawks to participate in events at Elon, ECU and Clemson. "I'm excited about our upcoming events and the enthusiasm that I've seen so far," she said.

Based on the organization of games, funds raised, and number of spectators, it is evident that Summer Blues was a success, and the women of UNCW club lacrosse fully intent on continuing the tournament in years to come.
