Don't find yourself sitting around doing nothing this summer, get out and experience what Wilmington has to offer! Check the event calendars on the UNCW web site and www.creativewilmington.com to jump start your summer. They offer lots of events like live music, theater and nightlife.
The Opera House Theater Company will be staying busy this summer with countless performances at the historic Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts. Located in downtown Wilmington, all night performances start at 8 p.m. and matinées start at 3 p.m.
Adapted from a Pulitzer Prize winning novel, "South Pacific" will kick off June's performances at Thalian Hall. The play is about the lives of the U.S. military men, nurses, and aboriginal natives occupying a Polynesian island during World War II. It is also about two parallel love stories, both threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war.
If theater isn't your thing, try out the music scene. At 1310 S. 5th St. there's a place called The Rusty Nail. Every Tuesday night the venue fills up with music lovers that enjoy a laid back atmosphere and a place to listen to some fine blues.
Upgrades to the extensive equipment inventory continue to occur on a regular basis. Amps, drums, bass rig and a complete sound system are all supplied and maintained by the Cape Fear Blues Society.
The first Saturday of every month they hold a "weekend edition," which entails a later version of the Tuesday jam. There's a Memphis and Chicago feel to the place with billiard tables and rotating bar stools.
For daytime fun, Wilmington offers visitors and locals a chance to rent items to use by the hour, day, or week. Salt Marsh Kayak Co. offers kayak and sailboat rentals in the Wrightsville Beach area. Boats are rented for one hour, a week or even longer. They're located at 222 Causeway Dr. on Wrightsville Beach.
Wrightsville Beach Supply Company is a great place to rent everything from beach chairs to grills to surfboards. If you've never surfed before, they also offer instructional surfing lessons.
Wrightsville Beach Supply Company employee and UNCW student Harrison Palmer said, "Our surfboards are the most popular rental. The lessons are a huge hit. We do a bunch of them everyday."
Don't forget that UNCW students can rent camping equipment from the Recreation Center for cheap prices. Go to www.uncw.edu/stuaff/camprec for more details.
