I appreciate the lead story “What’s in a name?” Oct. 18, 2007 by Ginny Tyson. I want to make sure readers know about a campus treasure trove of historical information and UNCW trivia: the UNCW Archives, located in Randall Library room 2008. Here you will find books, letters, newspapers (including all the Seahawks), videos and lots of online resources on our Web site (http://library.uncw.edu/web/collections/archives/index.html).
Here are some more fun facts similar to those in the story:
First day of class:
Wilmington College opened its doors at the Isaac Bear School on Market Street on Sept. 4, 1947 at 4 p.m. with seventeen faculty members and 238 students, of which 75 percent were veterans. The first student to register was Robert Huffman, merchandising.
First graduating class:
The 1st class to graduate was on September 11, 1947, following a course in air conditioning and refrigeration. The first associate’s degrees (2-year degrees) were awarded at Wilmington College commencement in 1949. Four-year (baccalaureate or bachelor) degrees were not awarded until 1965.
First faculty:
In April of 1947 Wilmington College had 17 faculty members to teach 238 students.

A male perspective on risque costumes
Perhaps one sees things differently from the male perspective, but Halloween has always seemed to be license for scantily-clad women to run amok downtown. Not all Halloween outfits are intended to be someone or something, sometimes it’s just an opportunity to entice, arouse, show off and have fun doing so.
While one can certainly identify with the viewpoint that dressing in such a way trounces upon the traditional theme of Halloween as we knew it in our childhood (for whom Halloween is intended for to begin with), the holiday at our age is more of an excuse to be someone different from our everyday lives, if only for one night.
And if you’re wondering why women tend to go for sexy while men come up with more creative costume ideas, think of it this way: By this time in the semester, the majority of college-aged males have spent the previous two months gorging themselves on beer, Hot-Pockets and fast food, and they are a bit less inclined to show off their bellies than their female peers. And if that isn’t a satisfactory answer, keep in mind that the women who tend to dress less at Halloween are usually looking for a certain kind of attention by doing so.
