"Spider-Man 3," "Shrek the Third," "Ocean's Thirteen," "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" are all scheduled to open this summer.

Movie sequels are slated to make a big splash this summer.

"Spider-Man 3," "Shrek the Third," "Ocean's Thirteen," "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" are all scheduled to open this summer.

Kyle Lewis, assistant prop master for "Cabin Fever 2," thinks that maybe Hollywood just ran out of ideas. Lewis says that "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" will probably be the biggest movie this summer, but he believes even the low-budget films will do decently.

Derek Pons, a UNCW film studies student and Blockbuster employee, said, "Summer is always the most common time of year for studios to release sequels, but this year seems like a lot, even by those standards."

Pons said, "There only seems to be a couple of big movies that aren't either sequels or adaptations this summer."

Pons does not think Hollywood is running out of ideas. "It just means they want as little risk as possible when spending millions on a movie, so they bank on franchises with well-known names that almost guarantees an audience," he said.

"When there are this many [movie sequels], some movies that seem like guaranteed hits during any other year are bound to be disappoitments box office wise," Pons said.

"There doesn't seem to be any original films coming out that will, even crack the top 10 for the summer, but thats not a bad thing," Pons said. "I'm looking forward to a bunch of these sequels, so I'm not complaining."
