CD Review: Seven Channels

Seven Channels recently released its debut album through Palm and Mars Records. The band's style is a cross between a harder Matchbox 20 and Incubus. This is the group's first release since being signed and their self-titled album includes the single "Breathe."

Seven Channels is composed of Kevin Kirkwood on vocals, Dallas Perry on guitar, Dalton Humphreys on bass and Ben Holt on drums. The rock-based alternative band writes songs that vary in sound and theme. The music includes racy beats, melodious tunes and guitar solos, and there are different techniques used on each track. Although it may seem to be slightly dark, this music also has an uplifting message and a feeling of hope.

The sounds of Seven Channels are becoming more frequent on MTV2 and radio stations across the country. The single "Breathe" is about never letting go of the past because "I'm breathing you in and I'm breathing you out." The sound is created through fast steady drum beats and a great melody.

The album also has softer, slow ballads such a "Submarine Dream" while "Velcro Parade" is about the trials one undergoes while still moving forward and moving ahead. The song "Rooftop" has more of a rock background with its steady fast-paced beat that undergoes an interesting transition.

Overall the band has a slight edge, though it seems to be proving itself versatile. Throughout the album Kirkwood changes the sound of his voice, which helps in allowing for a wider range.
