On Nov. 15, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the Communication Studies fraternity, Lambda Pi Eta, will host their first annual walk to support the Inner-City Scholarship Fund.
President of Lambda Pi Eta, Sarah Hollis said, "We wanted to choose a charity that was academically related because we are an honors society."
There were many other choices of charities to support for this walk, but "everyone in Lambda Pi Eta values education and thought it would be a great way to give back to people that haven't been as fortunate as [they] have been," Hollis said.
The Inner-City Scholarship Fund works toward granting scholarships to underprivileged children to ensure that they receive a quality education. The walk will take place at UNCW's track and will include live entertainment from two local bands and food and refreshments from Stickey Fingers. There will also be raffles and door prizes that everyone at the walk is eligible to win.
This event is also open to the Wilmington community. Tickets are being sold by every Lambda Pi Eta member for $10, and all proceeds will go toward the Inner-City Scholarship Fund.
This is the first major event Lambda Pi Eta has hosted, but they are planning for it to become an annual affair.
The preparation for this walk began on one of the organization's bi-weekly Tuesday night meetings when Lambda Pi Eta members broke into committees.
Public Relations Committee Chair Lydia D'Antona said the event has required "a lot of planning and publicity, in a short amount of time, but hopefully the turn out will be successful and we will raise a lot of money."
Publicity for the event thus far has included painting banners, printing flyers and visiting the meetings of every student organization on the UNCW campus.
Much like other student organizations on campus, members of Lambda Pi Eta are required to obtain a certain number of service hours through events such as Relay for Life or volunteering at places like Good Shepards; however, with the initiation of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund walk, Lambda Pi Eta has created its open philanthropic event that members hope will attract other student organizations and people within the community. They also hope the event will become a tradition for years to come.
